For this blog assignment, I chose to review Charlie Milner’s latest trip hop masterpiece. I heard it in section, and listening to it again was able to pick up on all of the hard work put into the composition. Charlie used samples from songs by Billy Holiday, Miles Davis, Al Green, the Cure, and Gymnopedie no. 1. The combo created an eerie trip-hop vibe that sounds like its from a post-apocalyptic-doo-wop-colony of musicians.
By using recycle, Charlie created his own bass line, and vocals - The repeated “No” and “Why” add plenty to the “trip” in “trip-hop”, as do the thunder claps. Also, the pitch change at about 3/4 of the way in during the thunder clap makes the gymnopedie loop sound as if its on a record player that just got struck by lightning. VERY cool effect! The slow, long-to-develop bass line is also characteristic of trip-hop and throws the listener off balance a bit.
Overall, this piece is a great success and one that I will be listening to in the future.
